Privacy Policy

Melodi is an iOS app for musicians who practice from notated music. Privacy is an important part of how Melodi is designed: your sheet music, annotations, repertoire, goals, and practice history are stored primarily on your device and are not uploaded to Melodi servers.

Melodi does not require an account, does not use advertising, and does not track you across other apps or websites.

This Privacy Policy explains what information Melodi stores, what limited information may leave your device, and how that information is used.

Information stored on your device

Your musical content and practice information are stored locally within Melodi on your device. This includes:

  • PDF files you import or create by scanning physical sheet music
  • Your library and repertoire
  • Piece information, shelves, progress, and page ranges
  • Handwritten annotations and markings
  • Practice sessions and practice history
  • Practice goals
  • Metronome settings
  • Practice reminder settings
  • Page thumbnails and other temporary files generated by the app

Melodi uses the protections provided by iOS for locally stored application data.

If device backup is enabled, some of this information may also be included in backups managed by Apple. Deleting Melodi removes its locally stored data from that device, although copies may remain in an existing device or iCloud backup according to Apple's backup and retention practices.

Camera access

Melodi may request access to your camera for two optional features: scanning sheet music and hands-free page turning.

Scanning sheet music

When you choose to scan pages, Melodi uses Apple's document scanning interface to capture physical sheet music and turn the scanned pages into a PDF in your library.

The captured pages are stored as part of that PDF. Melodi does not upload the scans to a server or retain separate photographs of the pages.

Hands-free page turning

Melodi can optionally use facial gestures such as a head movement, wink, or open mouth to turn pages while you play.

This feature uses Apple's ARKit face-tracking technology and processes the information on your device. Melodi uses only the information necessary to determine whether the gesture you selected has occurred.

Melodi does not store or transmit:

  • Camera images or video
  • Facial photographs
  • Facial landmarks or face geometry
  • Information used to identify you from your face

Face tracking is off by default. It operates only while the feature is enabled and a score is open, and it stops when you close the score, disable the feature, or leave the app.

You can disable the feature within Melodi or revoke camera access at any time through iOS Settings.

Information that may leave your device

Most Melodi features work entirely offline. Reading and annotating scores, managing your repertoire, using the metronome, tracking practice, setting goals, and scheduling practice reminders do not require Melodi to upload your musical or practice data.

Melodi currently uses the network for two purposes: optional catalogue lookups and product analytics.

Musical catalogue lookups

When you choose to match a piece of music to a catalogue entry, Melodi may send a search request to the Open Opus API at api.openopus.org.

The request contains the musical information needed to perform the search, such as a title or composer. It does not include your sheet music, practice history, annotations, Apple ID, or the contents of the rest of your library.

If the lookup is unavailable or you are offline, you can enter the information manually and continue using Melodi.

Usage analytics

Melodi uses PostHog to understand how people use the app and to help improve its design and features.

Analytics may include:

  • Screens you open and the order in which you visit them
  • Buttons, tabs, menu items, and other controls you use
  • The text label of a control you interact with; in some parts of the app, this may include the name of a piece in your library
  • When the app is opened, backgrounded, or closed
  • General technical information such as device model, iOS version, Melodi version, language, and time zone
  • Approximate geographic information derived from the network request
  • A randomly generated identifier associated with that installation of Melodi

The installation identifier is not your Apple ID and is not an advertising identifier. Melodi does not have user accounts, so analytics are not connected to a Melodi profile containing your name or contact information.

PostHog acts as a service provider for Melodi's analytics. Analytics information is used to understand and improve Melodi and is not sold or shared with advertising networks or data brokers.

Melodi never sends PostHog:

  • Your sheet music or PDF files
  • Images or thumbnails of score pages
  • Screenshots or recordings of your screen
  • Your handwritten annotations
  • Your practice history or session durations
  • Your practice goals
  • Your reminder contents
  • Your name, email address, or other contact information

Melodi does not enable session recording or screen recording in PostHog.

Reading and understanding your scores

Melodi may analyze your sheet music on your device to provide features such as:

  • Suggesting a title or composer
  • Finding individual pieces within a collection or anthology
  • Reading printed tempo markings
  • Helping distinguish between possible catalogue matches

Where supported, Apple-provided on-device intelligence may assist with this processing.

This processing occurs locally on your device. Melodi does not upload score pages, recognized text, or other contents of your sheet music for this purpose.

Practice history and goals

Melodi can automatically record practice activity while you use a score and associate that activity with the piece you are practicing.

Your practice history, goals, and related progress information are stored on your device. They are not sent to Melodi's analytics service or shared with third parties.

You can edit or delete individual practice entries within the app.

Practice reminders

If you enable practice reminders, Melodi may schedule notifications suggesting a piece to practice and a place to resume.

These are local notifications. Melodi determines and schedules them on your device using your locally stored practice information.

Melodi does not operate a push-notification server for these reminders, and information about the suggested piece, reminder timing, or whether you acted on the reminder is not sent to Melodi.

Practice reminders are optional and can be disabled at any time.

Tracking and advertising

Melodi does not display third-party advertising.

Melodi does not use the advertising identifier and does not track your activity across apps or websites owned by other companies for advertising or advertising measurement.

Melodi does not sell your personal information.

Children

Melodi does not require users to provide a name, email address, account profile, or other contact information.

The limited product analytics described above may apply when the app is used unless otherwise disabled or restricted. Melodi does not use that information for advertising, behavioural profiling, or tracking across other apps and websites.

Melodi is not designed to solicit personal information from children.

Data retention and deletion

Information stored locally by Melodi remains on your device until you remove it within the app or delete the app, subject to any device backups maintained by Apple.

Analytics information processed through PostHog is retained for as long as reasonably necessary to understand app usage and improve the product, up to maximum 7 years.

Because Melodi does not have user accounts and does not collect your name or email address as part of analytics, we may not be able to associate analytics records with a particular individual based on a request alone.

Your choices

You can control several privacy-related features at any time:

  • Camera access can be revoked in iOS Settings.
  • Hands-free facial gesture controls can be disabled in Melodi.
  • Practice reminders can be disabled in Melodi or through iOS notification settings.
  • Locally stored practice entries can be edited or deleted within the app.
  • Deleting Melodi removes the app and its locally stored data from the device, subject to any backups maintained by Apple.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as Melodi evolves.

When we make changes, we will publish the updated policy on this page and change the “Last updated” date above. If Melodi begins collecting or transmitting a new category of information, this policy will be updated to describe that practice.
